RIVLIN EULOGIZES 'MAN OF TRUTH, GENEROSITY AND COMPASSION'

UK’s former chief rabbi Jonathan Sacks passes away at 72

The prolific Jewish thinker, writer, teacher and spiritual leader had announced a cancer diagnosis last month; Israeli, Jewish leaders mourn his death. https://youtu.be/AvHvCcMqsaw

Lord Sacks, a theologian of the order of the Temple High Priests who proclaimed a Jew is both physical and spiritual. If a Jew is physical, then the people of Ishmael should be Jew as well but a Jew is one who is inwardly, spiritual, a way of life and not outwardly of our physical tribal body that is born and dies. Thus, a Jew, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, etc., our spiritual self is never born and he never dies but the tribal self that is born and dies. Thus, those who proclaim a Jew to be the physical self, they cannot build their covenant with Abraham who was of the Semitic race and as such these people become Antisemitic but they proclaim others who criticise them Antisemitic. For the Jews being Antisemitic, Jesus had to take a "Virgin Birth" among the most spiritually sick people of Judah tribe and they were his staunch enemies and crucified him. Much more in my other videos. In Jesus, we do not PASS JUDGEMENTS but tell the Gospel Truth, a very Bitter Pill for the once-born that are exploited by the clever psychics seeking their own praises whilst we, the pneumatic, sealed to serve our Supernatural Father Elohim, Allah, Parbrahm, etc. PRAISE HIM ONLY. I met Lord Sacks at Lady Margaret College, Oxford and told him that as a Jew is a spiritual self, inwardly and not outwardly, physical or the tribal self that is born and dies, not a single Jew died during the holocausts but the tribal people. To this question, he replied, "Jew is both physical and spiritual", an answer that the Temple Priests who killed Angel Stephen by stoning would have given. So, he was as wise as the Temple Priests who were making Jews physically of appearances and NOT SPIRITUAL as the Samaritans were who honoured Christ Jesus when He told the Woman at the well that He is the Messiah whereas in the Temple when Jesus told the Jews outwardly unfaithful to Abraham and Yahweh, the Saltless people that He is the Messiah, they took stones to kill him for proclaiming to be the Most High God Elohim, Allah, Parbrahm, etc., our Supernatural Father of our souls. And Jesus told the Temple Priests that they are “Saltless People” in John 8 where he compared the natural bastard that the woman would have produced out of adultery versus the Supernatural bastard from the cores of their hearts unfaithful to Abraham and Yahweh, the Saltless people of no conscience that hated the Gospel Truth, “A Jew is one who is inwardly, spiritual and not outwardly, of the physical body, the tribal people that were born and they died”.

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”

22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”

27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Jesus’ Claims About Himself

48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”

49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honour my Father and you dishonour me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever ponder over and not obeys my word will never see death.”

52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”

54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Iread an interesting article at Chabad [1] recently explaining the term tzaddik. If you’re unfamiliar with the word, in essence it means a supremely good and righteous person— a man after God’s own heart.

The fullest definition of the term would be a spiritual superhero. Yet, the tzaddik remains a “human of humans,” i.e., a rare person, possessing both a comfortable relatability and an out-of-this-world spiritual sensibility, both of which make him an inspiration to the world.

They are rare. One does not often find men possessed of such godly character, intent on serving God, loving others as themselves, and dedicated to bringing peace to humanity. Thus, when we recognize a tzaddik, the world takes note. All the more, the loss of a true tzaddik is felt, and their passing creates a hole in society that can’t be filled.

We have lost one of the great ones as Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (HaRav Ya’akov Zvi ben David Arieh z’’l) passed away on November 7, 2020.

First and foremost, he was a rabbi—a teacher, a shepherd, and a servant to the people. His rabbinic career began in 1978 and continued until his retirement in 2013 from his position as Chief Rabbi of England. His impact on Jewish thought was not diminished in the slightest by his retirement. If anything, his influence increased across the globe. He taught with tremendous insight, honesty, and practicality. He was a teacher, philosopher, theologian, author, and politician, and his influence, not just in Judaism but across all cultural and religious lines, was phenomenal. His accomplishments were recently recognized in his nomination for the 2021 Genesis Prize, a sort of Nobel Prize in Israel. He was and will continue to be one of the most influential Jewish leaders of our time.

His death makes me feel as if I have lost a beloved family member. I did not know Rabbi Sacks personally, but I felt that he knew me. Through his podcasts, books, and commentaries, he spoke to all of us. He helped the world to understand life, love of people, love of God, and much more. It’s strangely personal, and I know I’m not the only one feeling this, as I’ve observed the worldwide community response to his passing, and all felt this connection.

He was my mentor, though we never exchanged a word. As I prepared sermons, his teaching inspired me, and in turn, inspired others. Unbeknownst to him, his words guided me through personal struggles in life and leadership. He made Judaism more meaningful to me than any teacher I’ve ever had. When I read Rabbi Sacks’ writing, it was as if he was talking to me. Like I was sitting across the desk from him in his study, listening, learning, growing. I’ve had many conversations with FFOZ friends who shared a similar love for him.

This blog was initially written as a prayer request for Rabbi Sacks’ recovery, but before it could be published, he was gone. It is heartbreaking to consider that his light has dimmed, but I take comfort in the fact that the light of tzaddik never burns out. Rabbi Sacks is a true tzaddik. His service to God and dedication to loving humanity leaves a legacy that will serve the world for generations to come. For all of us whom he inspired, it is incumbent upon us to carry his light as a burning torch, illuminating the darkness of hatred, violence, and intolerance and speaking, as he has to all of us, shalom.

Rabbi Sacks leaves behind his loving wife of fifty years, Elaine, whom he referenced in so many stories of his life, and three children, Joshua, Dina, and Gila. Please join me in praying for them, and may his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the former chief rabbi of the United Kingdom whose extensive writings and frequent media appearances commanded a global following among Jews and non-Jews alike, died Saturday morning.

Sacks, 72, was in the midst of a third bout of cancer, which he had announced in October.

Sacks was among the world’s leading exponents of Orthodox Judaism for a global audience. In his 22 years as chief rabbi, he emerged as the most visible Jewish leader in the United Kingdom and one of the European continent’s leading Jewish voices, offering Jewish wisdom to the masses through a regular segment he produced for the BBC. He had a close relationship with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who called Sacks “an intellectual giant” and presented him with a lifetime achievement award in 2018.

Sacks was also an immensely prolific author, addressing pressing social and political issues in a succession of well received books. His popular commentary on the prayer book, published by Koren, helped to dethrone the more traditionalist Artscroll Siddur as the preeminent prayer book in American Modern Orthodox synagogues.

His most recent book, “Morality: Restoring the Common Good in Divided Times,” was published in September.

Sacks’ office had not specified what type of cancer he had, saying in October that “he remains positive and upbeat and will now spend a period of time focused on the treatment he is receiving from his excellent medical team,” the statement said.

Sacks had been treated for cancer twice before, in his 30s and again in his 50s, a fact that wasn’t widely known until it was disclosed in a 2012 book.

Sacks taught at Yeshiva University and New York University as well as at King’s College London and several other top schools. He was a Senior Fellow at Canada’s Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.

Sacks, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 and awarded a Life Peerage in the British House of Lords in 2009, was an outspoken advocate of religious and social tolerance throughout his career.

He was also an advocate for the compatibility of science and religion, which some people see as mutually exclusive.

Sacks was normally averse to mixing religion and politics. But he did take public stances on two topics that were often ensnared with European politics: Israel and anti-Semitism.

He spoke out publicly as Britain’s Labour Party was engulfed in an anti-Semitism scandal under its previous leader Jeremy Corbyn, calling Corbyn an anti-Semite.

“We have an anti-Semite as the leader of the Labour Party and her majesty’s opposition. That is why Jews feel so threatened by Mr. Corbyn and those who support him,” Sacks said in 2018 during an interview with the New Statesman.

That judgment paved the way for the current British Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis to harshly condemn the Labour Party, a precedent-setting event in British Jewish life.

Corbyn was replaced in April by centrist Keir Starmer, who has apologized for how anti-Semitism was allowed to flourish in Labour’s ranks under Corbyn. Starmer, who is married to a Jewish woman, expressed his condolences to “the entire Jewish world” in a tweet on Saturday.

“He was a towering intellect whose eloquence, insights and kindness reached well beyond the Jewish community. I have no doubt that his legacy will live on for many generations,” Starmer wrote.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin mourned Sacks’s passing, who he called “a man of words… and of creativity, a man of truth, whose generosity and compassion built bridges between people.”

He said Sacks “bravely faced difficult questions and always found the right words to illuminate the Torah and explain its paths. We will always remember his warnings against violence in the name of God, and his belief that we have the power to heal a fractured world.”

Marie van der Zyl, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said Sacks was “a giant of both the Jewish community and wider society. His astounding intellect and courageous moral voice were a blessing to all who encountered him in person, in writing or in broadcast.”

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, president of the Conference of European Rabbis, also called Sacks “a giant of world Jewry” who “will be truly missed.”

Israel’s chief rabbis also eulogized Sacks.

Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef said: “The people of Israel have lost a unique voice that will be sorely missed.”

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau said Sacks was “a man of spirit who championed the word of Torah-keeping Judaism and was a staunch guardian of tradition from generation to generation.”

World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said the WJC “and the entire Jewish world are profoundly saddened by the passing of former British Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks,” who he called “a theologian of extraordinary intellectual depth and moral conviction.

“He was also a pillar of integrity who inspired Jews and non-Jews alike… We extend our deepest condolences to Lord Sacks’s wife Elaine and their family.”

In 2017, in a widely circulated YouTube video, Sacks called anti-Zionism a new form of anti-Semitism, arguing that it denies Jews the “right to exist collectively with the same rights as everyone else.”

The video was based on a 2016 speech Sacks delivered in Brussels, which is widely seen as having paved the way to Britain’s adoption later that year of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism.

But the video went far beyond political and academic circles, and became symbolic of Sacks’ ability to reach mainstream audiences. Rachel Riley, a famous British Jewish game show television host, last year shared the video, telling her over 600,000 Twitter followers that it is “the best explanation of antisemitism I’ve seen.”

Sacks branched out beyond religious and Jewish cultural thought as well. In 2017 he delivered a Ted Talk about “facing the future without fear” and what he called a “fateful moment” in Western history after the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president, citing Thomas Paine and anthropologists to make an argument about returning a culture of togetherness.

Born in London in 1948, Sacks studied at Cambridge University. While a student there in the 60s, he visited Rabbi Menachem Schneerson — the spiritual leader who is credited with turning the Hasidic Chabad-Lubatvitch movement into a powerful organizing force of Jewry around the world — in New York City. Sacks credits that meeting with inspiring him to get involved with Jewish studies, as he detailed in a series of videos for Chabad.org in 2011.

He became the rabbi of the Golders Green synagogue in London’s most Orthodox neighbourhood in the late 70s and then rabbi of the Marble Arch synagogue in central London, before becoming the UK’s chief rabbi in 1991, a position he held until 2013.

Sacks is survived by his wife Elaine, three children and several grandchildren.
